Annual General Meeting 2023

Annual General Meeting 2023

Report from the Annual General Meeting, Wednesday 4th October 2023

The Annual General Meeting 2023 was held on Wednesday 4th October and a big thank you to Waitrose Uttoxeter for the use of their community room for the meeting.

The general report from the meeting was that on the whole last year was encouraging with returning members after the knock back of the Covid pandemic and our membership has returned to pre-covid levels and rising.

Thanks was given in particular to our loyal hardworking Staff, Sue and Di.  They work tirelessly behind the scenes to plan and deliver the Tuesday event schedule and the outings throughout the year and keep our Facebook updated.  They are supported by our wonderful volunteers who Gateway wish to thank wholeheartedly for their enthusiasm and support in making these evenings and outings so successful too. Not forgetting the our website guru!

The Chairman, Paul, expressed his appreciation to his fellow Trustees whose work is based entirely on maintaining the Club and looking for further investment in the club, albeit through fundraising, grant applications or donations and sponsorship.  Without this funding Gateway simply cannot operate.

Gateway recognise and have gratefully received donations from Uttoxeter Lions, Uttoxeter Rotary, NFU Mutual, Barratt Foundation and private individuals who have supported and appreciated the work we do for our members.

The future of the Club is looking positive and expansion could well be on the cards.  Thank you everyone.

Why not come along and join this successful team of individuals as a Trustee or Volunteer and help us build a brighter future for Uttoxeter Gateway Club?

Until next time…
Thrilling Night at the Gateway Summer Ball

Thrilling Night at the Gateway Summer Ball

Thrilling Night at the Gateway Summer Ball with DJ Paul Nixon

Whilst another great night was had down at our local, The Steeplechase, catching a quick game of dominoes or cards with our members, the excitement for this week’s thrilling night at the Summer Ball was tangible.

Indeed, the Summer Ball and Disco was an opportunity to celebrate summer! Okay, maybe the sun has been a little absent from our skies compared to last year but that certainly didn’t stop our members from being rays of sunshine at Wilfred House on Tuesday evening.

The music was resonating from the speakers thanks to our resident DJ Paul Nixon, soon toes were tapping and fingers drumming and before you knew it members were on the floor dancing the evening away. Sue, Fay and Pauline knew all the moves and joined in the fun. The volunteers were not to be left out and soon there was laughter and happiness in abundance, who needs sunshine when we have friends to share our time with!

Thrilling Night Lark in the Park 2023Talking of a week or so we hope to see you at The Uttoxeter Lions ‘Lark in the Park’ on Saturday 26th August starting at 1.00pm. We will be there so why not drop by and check out the wonderful array of goodies in our wheelbarrow raffle and better still buy a ticket or two! Other surprises on our stand are worth a visit too and of course smiles in abundance, afterall we are Uttoxeter Gateway Club.

Until next time…

Good News Week

Good News Week

Wonderful donation of £3221.50

This week was our Bowling Week which started off with the usual gusto and a fabulous attendance, this activity is clearly a favourite of a lot of our members. There were a few hiccups encountered but nothing our trusty staff weren’t able to resolve 😊

But the best news this week has to be the successful sharing of the NFU Mutual Giving Fund 2023. NFU Mutual posted a Facebook request for nominations for a local worthy cause.

“NFU Mutual has allocated a £1.92m national fund to support local frontline charities, NFU Mutual’s Agency Giving Fund.”

“To ensure that this fund is distributed across the UK, NFU Mutual has invited our agency to nominate a local charity to receive an equal share of this fund, a donation of £3,221.50.

We are very grateful for the wonderful work your charity is undertaking to support our community. So, our agency would like to put forward Uttoxeter Gateway Club to NFU Mutual to receive these funds.”

I was thrilled to read this email and swiftly responded.  I am delighted to say we have safely received this wonderful donation of £3221.50.  So many thanks to NFU Mutual, specifically Rosie at the Uttoxeter Branch of NFU Mutual, who persevered despite a few contacting issues (now ironed out).

But also thanks to you, our Facebook followers out there, who saw the link, shared it and most importantly named Uttoxeter Gateway Club.

We are delighted to have this boost to our funds and we are hoping to utilise the money for our members benefit very soon.

Fun and Games down at the Steeplechase Pub

Fun and Games down at the Steeplechase Pub

This week we met at The Steeple Chase on The Market Place for a drink and pub games.

The night out at the Steeplechase was indeed a good night out.

Sometimes the chance to stand around a pool table and pot a few balls is all that is needed to help let the stresses of the day melt away.  Shuffling a few dominos (not the pizza variety from across the road from the Pub but tablets of wood with dots on!) is absolutely the order of the day and about as strenuous as I could manage!  A nice long drink and a catch up with friends, whilst keeping half an eye on the intense game of drafts on the neighbouring table.

Our night out ‘down the pub’ a delightful evening indeed. I say cheers Gateway team for a another enjoyable evening.

Until next time…

This Week We Went Bowling

This Week We Went Bowling

Bowling at Cinebowl, Uttoxeter

This week our members were back at Cinebowl.

Another exciting week finely tuning their skills at bowling those balls down the lanes.  We weren’t disappointed as pins flew in all directions to the roar of the crowd, or at least to the roar of the one bowling!

It’s great to see the Club members enjoying themselves yet patiently awaiting their next turn.  Like all games there are those that do well but we must give a special shout out to Andrew who achieved 6 Strikes and is reported to be really proud.   So he should be! I’m just happy to keep my ball on the lane.

Our members really enjoy their nights at Cinebowl and it is usually a good turnout.  So why not join us on the 23rd of May when we will be back there?
In the meantime, next week we are going to be playing more games but this time we are heading to The Steeplechase on Market Place for a drink and a game.

See you next week…
Gateway House of Games Night

Gateway House of Games Night

Another fun night at Club this week!

House of Games was the theme, and the evening certainly stretched the brain cells and taste buds. Our members were divided into three teams, with each team seated around a table. A team captain was chosen to present their answers to the the Club Leaders. The evenings game was in the form of a Quiz Night.
Sue kicked off with a general knowledge round. Each team given three possible answers, answer A, answer B or answer C. It was really good to see the members conferring with each other before their team captain gave their answers.

Picture Round at House of Games Night

The Challenging Picture Round!

Next round was certainly a challenge and there were some rather interesting faces being pulled as the members were give a series of savoury snack to taste by Di, their challenge to decide what flavour it was meant to be? The first one was suppose to be Chilli, however, I concluded the nearest that snack had been Chilli was if it sat in the fridge! The last was very strong and a flavour that certainly was hanging around in the mouth providing the perfect opportunity to take a break for tuck shop break. I can’t help but get the feeling Tuck Shop was very popular as an orderly queue was quickly formed in front of Di as she served everyone.

Drink and snack purchased it was back to the game, further rounds consisted of guessing the numbers of items in jars. The jars were lined up on the table and no one was allowed to touch them. Members had to give their best estimate. From the number of £2.00 coins in one jar, to the number of discs that were not blue in another jar (There were a lot of blue discs), to name two examples.

There was a picture round too. The pictures were challenging and I definitely thought one looked like the eye of a crocodile but apparently it was a toad! Well having never been eyeballed by either, how was I to know?

Another evening of fun and conversation with friends was enjoyed and everyone went off for the Easter Break to return on the 11th April for Easter Bingo.

Happy Easter everyone!

Uttoxeter Gateway Club’s Afternoon Tea Event

Uttoxeter Gateway Club’s Afternoon Tea Event

Well as they say, it’s all over bar the shouting!

The day dawned with promise, a grey cloud or two but we all arrived prompt at 10.00am to continue the preparations for Uttoxeter Gateway Club’s Afternoon Tea Event.  We were all fired up with a boost from selling out of all 50 tickets!  Though facing the daunting task preparing 50 covers to be ready on time for the hungry mouths.
The Front of House Team set to work laying out of tables, individual settings and flower arranging. Not for getting a bit of music accompaniment and the the presentation table for the stall and raffle.  Whilst a hive of activity was happening in the kitchen by the Catering Team, saw cake stands miraculously appear with tasty morsels to tempt every appetite.
At two o’clock the sun came out and our guests came too. These included members families, Friends of Gateway, even four generations of one family!  Kettles were boiling ready. The Members, Staff, Trustees and Volunteers who made up the two Teams, worked tirelessly to make the afternoon run smoothly.  A steady stream of pots of tea and plates of sandwiches and cakes found their way to the correct tables.
Our guest perused the stall of goodies and clutched their raffle tickets in anticipation.  It all climaxed in the draw of the raffle and many happy winners collected the delightful donations of a hamper from Tesco, a couple of pamper hampers from Doveridge W.I to name but a few – many thanks to all.  Prizes won and tea cups emptied saw the afternoon draw to a close.
A frantic dash clearing away, stacking chairs and tables, sweeping of  floors and with a final check of the kitchen we handed The Heath Community Centre, Uttoxeter back to Mary with thanks.
After a good nights sleep, the general consensus was a job well done and another great success for our members who once again show us what they are made of with beaming smiles.
These events are supported by a host of generous people behind the scenes who give up their time selflessly, loaning their crockery,  baking goodies and allowing us to raid their gardens these unsung hero’s we thank you too.
