Afternoon Tea with Uttoxeter Gateway Club

We thought it would be a great idea to host an Afternoon Tea.

Our members could help make cakes, savouries and sandwiches, set the room and the tables and then help serve all their families, friends and guests.

The Event was held at the Heath Community Centre on Sunday March 15th, with our members meeting at 10.00 sharp. It took us 10 minutes to unload cars!! We all washed our hands and started work.

The kitchen staff boiled eggs, buttered bread, whipped cream, cooked sausage rolls, put the jackets potatoes in the oven for our lunches, grated cheese, spread jam and cream on scones, cut tray bakes, and much more.

The front of house staff set out tables according to my sweated over table plan, spread table cloths, matched 50 cups, saucers and plates, arranged flowers, reserved tables, put the raffle prizes out and then we had lunch!!

As 2pm came nearer, we washed our hands, put on our new black aprons and welcomed our guests, then the table plan went out of the window!!.

The kitchen crew filled tea pots, arranged cakes, savouries and sandwiches on beautiful cake stands and the room filled with our friends and families.

We made sure our guests had oceans of tea, we chatted and laughed, we sold raffle tickets, flower troughs and bird boxes and had a lovely afternoon.

Thank you to everybody who was involved in any way and to our guests for coming and being so generous.

Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 virus, the Uttoxeter Gateway Club has now been suspended, our day trip postponed and the holiday cancelled,

Please keep well and safe

See you all as soon as we can

A Christmas 2019 Update

Hi Everybody – just a quick Christmas update

We have been very busy fundraising for the last couple of months. We have had stalls at two Makers Markets, the Victorian Night and the Cracker Night. We have also run a raffle with many prizes that were donated by friends of the Gateway Club, local shops and businesses.

We also had our Christmas Party Night, which this year we held at Bradley House. We dressed up, had a delicious meal, and danced the night away! We gave out Christmas presents, which had very kindly been donated by Waitrose. Thanks to Pat and your team for a lively night.

The Uttoxeter Gateway Club could not survive without the help and kindness of many individuals, local shops and businesses, so from all at Gateway a big thanks you and a very Happy New Year.

Lark in the Park 2019

Uttoxeter Gateway Club at the Lark in the Park 2019

We again had a stall at this years Lark in the Park along with a raffle on the stall and the “Wheelbarrow Walk Around” raffle.

The weather was fantastic and there was a great turn out from our members and staff as well as the public who yet again amazed us all with their generosity shown towards our club.

The members had lots of fun pushing the wheelbarrow around the park visiting all the other exhibitors and did a great job selling tickets to everyone they bumped into!

The idea of the Wheelbarrow Raffle meant that by buying a ticket, you could win all the gifts in it, This year the total value of the wheelbarrow gifts probably added up to nearly £50 and was won by a mother and daughter who stayed late enough to be able to take all the goods home with them at the end of the day. We hope you enjoyed the prizes

The main stall did a very brisk trade selling lucky dip tickets and managed to give all who helped a great afternoon entertainment. Again all the prizes and most of the gifts were organised by Pauline Wilson, our previous club leader, and we must say a huge thank you to her for the vast amount of work she does behind the scenes getting ready for an event like this.

At this years Lark in the Park we launched our biggest fundraising event – the Gateway Bonanza Prize Draw, which has some fantastic prizes. Tickets are £1 each and are on sale from staff and members!

The event was a big financial success for the club but was tinged with a little sadness as Michelle Ritchie, our contact at Barclays Bank, who usually match funded our takings for the day, unexpectedly passed away a few months ago. Michelle was a huge supporter of our club and helped every year with the Lark in the Park event. Our thoughts go out to family and friends.

We are now all looking forward to our next event at the club and would like to thank everyone who supported us this year at Lark in the Park and as usual everyone is welcome to visit us at our club house.

Rugeley Cricket ClubOn Wednesday 31st July, we went to Rugeley Cricket Club to play in a cricket tournament.

The team did really well to reach the final, playing together for the first time against teams that regularly play together.

We had a really fun day and would like to say a big thank you to Steve Lightfoot and his team from Staffordshire Cricket for inviting us along.

Shropshire,Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes

Shropshire • Staffordshire • Cheshire Blood Bikes

Blood Bikes Logo

Uttoxeter Gateway Club members enjoyed a visit from the Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes on Tuesday. Colin Hodgkins, a blood biker, gave the members a really interesting interactive talk about the work of the blood bikers.

They provide a voluntary service, free of charge to all hospitals and hospices in the region, transporting urgent supplies of blood, blood samples for urgent analysis, breast milk and other samples or equipment.

As you can see in the photos, our members really enjoyed exploring the motorbike.

Our Summer Holiday

Gateway Club Summer Holiday in Llandudno

So, the day finally came and after a great deal of planning, discussing, and negotiating, 16 members and 4 staff went off to Llandudno. We were driven there by Chris from A1 travel, who is always helpful to the club and liked by all the members.

The weather had been poor to say the least, but the forecast was OK for the next few days.

We picnicked in Conway and then went on to the Grande Hotel. We checked everybody into their rooms and unpacked.

After time to explore the hotel, we went in for dinner. It didn’t take long for all of us to get used to the meal routine and the hotel staff were very helpful. We watched the entertainment and danced the night away, young and old.

Tuesday the weather was so good we decided that was the day to go up The Great Orme, some of us by tram and some by cable car. From the top, the views were marvellous. We learnt quite quickly to shout a warning when the seagulls came close when Di lost her sandwich. Most of us thought that was very funny!!

We all learnt a little about the area and the sheep.

Fay designed a quiz that evening, which was won by the team called the Grande Four. Again, we danced the night away.

Wednesday, we booked the hop-on-hop-off bus and went to an open farm where the geese gaggled at us, the owls hooted and the peacock displayed. We all had a coffee and a cake, and then got back on the bus to Conway for fish and chips; well, we have to keep our strength up to……dance the night away!!

Thursday some of us went swimming and some of us shopping – rock, souvenirs, presents, new clothes – all purchased then back to the hotel for cake and fizz for James’ birthday.

We put our party clothes on for our last night, had our awards ceremony, where we say thank you to everybody for being helpful or kind or a great room buddy or a great dancer or for making us laugh. And then…..we danced the night away!!

Friday, all packed and having said “thank you and goodbye” to all the staff and the other guests (who all had lovely things to say about all our members) we ambled our way home via Woollaton Hall for a game of football, a picnic and an ice cream.

Thanks to everybody for making our holiday a great success.
