The Club meets up every Tuesday for a social evening.  However, every now and then we try and do something a bit different.

So last week we took a few of our members out on a Thursday evening to the Denstone Players Amateur Dramatic Society latest Pantomime production of Robinson Crusoe The Pirates!

Once again the players put on superb performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, very apparent by the beaming faces all round.

Until next time…

10 Pin Bowling with delicious Cake!

10 Pin Bowling with delicious Cake!

10 Pin Bowling with a special addition – Birthday Cake!

Most months the Gateway Club likes to take our members along to Cinebowl Uttoxeter for a game of 10 pin bowling.

Each month the feedback is very good and our members continue to enjoy this opportunity.

Birthday Cat Cake This week had icing on the cake, literally.  One of our lovely members will celebrate their birthday soon and chose to bring along a lovely home baked Cat Cake to share with all the members, her friends.

It was this gesture that served as a reminder of the success of the Uttoxeter Gateway Club and the friendships that can be made there.

I am also part of the members Whatsapp group and it is delightful to see how a new member has been accepted so readily and has integrated with their new friends. Uttoxeter Gateway Club certainly helps these wonderful people.

Until next time…
Dapple Grey – Absolutely Mouthwatering Meal

Dapple Grey – Absolutely Mouthwatering Meal

Meal at the Dapple Grey

This week was a walk down the road to the Dapple Grey.

It may have been dark and miserable outside but the welcome was warm and bright.

The orders were placed and drinks acquired, tables occupied and conversation rang out until food arrived.

There was a selection of differing dishes from steak to burgers. However, it was very clear that the dessert menu was the one most were glued to and judging by the beaming smiles when those puddings arrived, worth every penny. You can’t beat a spoon full of custard on a winter’s evening!

Note for the diary:

Next week we are off to check out the new set up at Cinebowl. Members are very excited about that!

Until next time…

New Year Round Up 2024

New Year Round Up 2024

A New Year Round Up

A Reverse Raffle

The New Year started with a spin; a reverse raffle. This was unusual, great way to start the New Year activities and a lot of fun.

The idea is that there is a pile of prizes and when your raffle ticket is called out you pick a mystery prize (but you can’t open it). However, once all the prizes have been taken from the pile you may ‘steal’ a prize from another member!

This continues until all the numbers have been called out. At that point you may have no prizes or a few. These are of course as mentioned mystery prizes and some members were happier with their winnings than others. A tin of beans or a box of chocolates – I know which I would prefer.

Our members had not played this before and lots of laughter and speculation as to what was wrapped up inside it. This activity went down really well, we will definitely do it again sometime.

Bingo But Not Any Old Bingo

The following week members were eyes down in concentration for a round of Bingo. Not just Bingo but Chocolate Bingo, always a winner at Gateway Club.

10 Pin Bowling – Strike!!!

The members met up at Uttoxeter Cinebowl for the monthly 10 pin bowling session to be greeted with some exciting news. The bowling lanes are to undergo an upgrade soon and the tired machinery to be replaced with a modern twist. Hopefully, this will resolve the few issues encountered in the past few sessions. Not that our members ever let that get them down and the air rang out to shouts of delight as another strike or two was achieved.

A note for your diary

This week gateway will be dusting off the games and having a games night to cheer up these chilly and blustery evenings. Why not come along and join in the fun?

Until next time…

Uttoxeter Gateway Club Celebrates a Year of Memorable Moments and Community Support

It is time to take a moment to reflect on the last twelve months at Uttoxeter Gateway Club as we celebrates a year of memorable moments and community support.

The Club have celebrated milestone birthdays at the Dapple Grey and Wilfred House. Gone to the pantomime at Denstone. Had a cup of tea or two at our Afternoon Tea Party and some have travelled as far as the Isle of Wight.

The Club managed to bring everyone home safe after a trip to Chester Zoo and enjoy a Family Fun Day. Had a great Lark in the Park, enjoyed the Switching on of Christmas Lights, and a Cracker of a Night, thanks to the Uttoxeter Lions.

Uttoxeter U3A Ukulele Band performed two concerts for us. No month would be complete without visiting Uttoxeter Cinebowl for a quick game of 10 pin bowling or a treat on the Big Screen to see Disney’s Wish.

We have spread the news of the Club courtesy of our website guru on the internet, expanded our coverage on a Facebook page and been helped along by BlueSky Radio.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our Staff, Volunteers, Trustees, Fundraising Supporters.

From the local companies like Pym and Wildsmith, (who have chosen us as their charity for this year,) Ashmores Ice Creams, Uttoxeter NFU Mutual, the Barratt Foundation, Tesco, and Waitrose. Other supportive charities like the Uttoxeter Lions, and the private donations that all come together to allow us the opportunity to give these wonderful adults a taste of a social life many of us take for granted.

Thank you all so much. Without you, there would be no Uttoxeter Gateway Club!

Have a Happy New Year and the Club will be back in 2024.

Until the next time…

Christmas Cheer Strikes at Cinebowl!

Christmas Cheer Strikes at Cinebowl!

Christmas Cheer Strikes at Cinebowl for Uttoxeter Gateway Club!

Our final event of 2023 was a festive blast at Cinebowl, and it turned out to be more than just a night of bowling! While strikes and cheers are always part of the fun, who could have expected a special guest appearance? Santa Claus himself, wrapped in his signature red and white, strolled in alongside a cheerful elf! Maybe it was the aroma of delicious pizza (we won’t blame him!), but seeing Santa brought pure joy and laughter to our members’ faces. This surprise visit made our last Cinebowl outing of 2023 truly unforgettable.

A huge thank you to Santa and his jolly elf for sharing their Christmas magic with us! And an even bigger thank you to Cinebowl for their incredible support of Uttoxeter Gateway Club throughout the year. We can’t wait to see you again in 2024!

Until next year…

Generous Community Support Leads to Over £200 Raised for Uttoxeter Gateway Club at the Uttoxeter Lions Cracker Night 2023

The Uttoxeter Lions Cracker Night was a resounding success for Uttoxeter Gateway Club. It was a delight to witness many of our members engaging with the festivities and visiting our Tombola Stall at the Town Hall.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Pauline for sorting out all the Tombola prizes and tickets, our exceptional team of “Elf volunteers” for their unwavering dedication in selling tickets, and the generous Uttoxeter residents who supported Uttoxeter Gateway Club by purchasing tickets. The event was a resounding success, with all tickets sold and over £200.00 raised.

We extend our warmest gratitude to the Uttoxeter Lions for organizing this annual event.

We eagerly await the upcoming event at Uttoxeter Cinebowl, which we anticipate will be another triumphant occasion. Keep an eye out for our next report to stay updated on the latest developments.

Unforgettable Christmas Meal 2023

Unforgettable Christmas Meal 2023

Uttoxeter Gateway Club Unforgettable Christmas Meal: A Magical Evening of Festive Fun, Friendship, and Community Spirit

Oh, what a magical night! The Uttoxeter Gateway Club members, staff, volunteers, and trustees gathered together with carers and family to celebrate Christmas in style with an unforgettable Christmas meal at the New Broom at Checkley. The doors were thrown open to give us all a warm welcome, and DJ Paul set the scene with disco lights and background music. Laughter filled the room as we pulled crackers, read jokes, and donned our festive hats.

The delicious starters arrived, and the clatter of cutlery replaced the chatter. We savoured every bite of the turkey with all the trimmings, including a delightful selection of vegetables, sprouts included of course. My personal highlight was the crispy pig in a blanket, accompanied by rich gravy, a true delight. A huge thank you to the kitchen elves for their culinary magic!

After the main course, we cleared our plates to make room for a tasty portion of Christmas pudding and piping hot custard. The Black Eyed Peas got the toes tapping, and the room exploded with energy as we danced the night away. We even sneaked in a quick Time Warp! Time seemed to fly by, and before we knew it, taxis were arriving to bring the evening to a close.

But not before our lovely members were presented with Christmas gifts, thanks to the kindness of Uttoxeter Waitrose, who donated ‘Snapper’ the Venus flytrap as featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert. Each member also received a Cadbury’s selection box, kindly donated by Uttoxeter NFU Mutual. We are truly grateful for all the donations received throughout the year, which make such events as our Christmas Party possible.

The hard work of our staff, volunteers, and trustees is truly appreciated, and it is reflected in the joy on the faces of our members.

Our festivities are in full swing, so before the blink of an eye it is all over, let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year!

Until next time…

Excited Members Immerse Themselves in Disney’s Wish!

Exclusive Screening of Disney’s Wish Ignites Joyful Celebration

Last Tuesday our members routinely turned up to the Uttoxeter Cinebowl.

However, their evening was anything but routine. The Uttoxeter Gateway Club leaders had arranged for a private showing on one of the screens. A whole screen to ourselves, what a treat. And as if that wasn’t enough, the film we were there to see was the new Disney release Wish!

You are never too old for a good Disney film and the screen was soon filled with a riot of colour and music surrounded the audience in a warm cloak of joy. Our members experienced a spectacular show and the evening was a resounding success.

Next Week – Notes for Your Diary

This coming Tuesday, we are at the New Broom at Checkley for the annual Christmas Meal and Disco.

Later in the week, on Thursday at 6.00pm, the fundraising team can be found at the Uttoxeter Town Hall for the Uttoxeter Lions Cracker Night (visit their Facebook page). Why not wrap up warm and come on down and buy a tombola ticket or two?

Fabulous U3A Ukulele Band Concert 2023

Fabulous U3A Ukulele Band Concert 2023

What a treat we had at Uttoxeter Gateway Club with U3A!

The Uttoxeter U3A Ukulele Band turned out in style starting our Christmas Season with a smile and Christmas jumpers in abundance. The atmosphere of anticipation crackled through the air as our members waited patiently for the band.

As soon as they appeared on stage the room was filled with the sound of applause and shakers being waved. With song sheets at the ready, the roof was quickly raised by the voices of our enthusiastic members, their families and carers. With thanks to Karen Moore for her kind donation of percussion instruments, the sound of tambourines, maracas and egg shakers joined the voices in a round of happy delight.

U3A played a selection of favourites including American Pie, Brown Eyed Girl and Hi Ho Silver Lining which quickly warmed the vocal cords. After a brief interval for the tea or coffee and a mince pies (thanks to our wonderful Pauline) the fun continued with a homage to Christmas to get us in the festive spirit.

The U3A Ukulele Band are playing again later this year to share the joy with a number of the elderly residents of Uttoxeter and I think Uttoxeter Gateway Club can say that they are in for a real treat. Thank you U3A. We hope to hear from you again in the new year.

The next thrilling adventure on Tuesday next week is a trip to the Cinebowl but rather than bowling this time we are going to see a film! So be there in time for the start and remember to be collected afterwards a bit later at 8.45pm.

Until next time…
