COVID-19 themed Scams

The National Fraud Reporting Centre has reported a new trend in scams relating to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and vulnerable people may be particularly at risk.

For a small group of people, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may increase their susceptibility to the risk of financial abuse due to being home alone, answering telephones and being on the internet more than usual.

Fraudsters are exploiting the spread of coronavirus to commit various types of fraud and cyber crime. It’s important to be cautious, as fraudsters are changing their methods all the time.

Recent Coronavirus related scams include:

Fake COVID-19 home-testing scams – The public are warned not to respond to emails or open their doors to bogus healthcare workers claiming to be offering ‘home-testing’ for the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Criminals target members of the public with NHS scam emails – ActionFraud has received 41 reports of a scam email pretending to be from HM Government asking for donations to the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak. This is a fake email and your money will only end up in the hands of a criminal.

Here is a typical scam phone call:

“Good morning, I’m calling from the NHS track and trace service. According to our system, you are likely to have been in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. This means that you now need to self-isolate for 7 days and take a COVID-19 test.”

“OK. Can you tell me who that person was?”

“I’m not able to tell you that. That is confidential information.”

“Right. Um… so…”

“But you do need to be tested within the next 72 hours. So can I just get the best mailing address so that we can send a kit to you?”

“Ok (gives address)”

“Thank you – and I just need to take a payment card so that we can finalise this and send the kit to you.”

“Sorry – a payment card? I thought this was all free?”

“No – I’m afraid not. There is a one-off fee of £50 for the kit, and test results. Could you read off the long card number for me, please, when you’re ready.”

“No – that’s not right. This is part of the NHS so there’s no charge.”

“I’m afraid there is. Can you give me the card number please – this is very important, and there are penalties for not complying.”

At this point you put the phone down.

This is how scammers work. And vulnerable people will fall for it. -Cheryl Rice, Development Worker SCVYS

Zoom Meeting Update

Zoom Meeting 9th June – Scavenger Hunt

I know it’s not the same as mixing with people we know and like, but at present it is the best we can hope for sooooooo    we   ZOOOOOOOOOM.

This week we had a scavenger Hunt, where we are given a question, maybe find something smooth, or something beginning with R or something smaller than the palm of your hand and off we all scuttle to look for the most unusual item we can find.

One of the questions was, find something sweet and Nichola grabbed her mum, how lovely was that! We had boots, stones, books, smellies, cake, balloons, ornaments, rhubarb vodka, candles, greenery, and of course we couldn’t leave it out, the Toilet Roll.

Well done to some of the group who dressed up as if we were in the jungle!!

A big thanks to Rachel who put it all together for us and from the photo you can see her peering through the undergrowth, great evening and great makeup.

We all really enjoyed it.

Depending on certain numbers being called, you have to hold up one of the three props we used. Easy I hear you say, try it and you may think differently.

The events programme is on the website but we have gone slightly out of order. Next week we are having a Scavenger Hunt, oh and we are dressing up, why don’t you come and join us?

We meet at 7.00pm on Tuesday evenings; come and see what we get up to.

Seaside Zoom Picnic

Our ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM meeting last night was good fun.

We played bingo, but in these times it has to be slightly different so we involved a wooden spoon, a pair of socks and a cuddly toy!!

Sandy BeachNext week on Tuesday 19th May, as we should have been going to Skegness this Sunday for a day out, we thought we would go to the beech virtually and have a picnic. So bring everything you would take to the beech with you – hat, sunglasses, towel, ice cream, costume, bat, ball, bucket, spade, etc., and of course the picnic, which we will eat on air. There may also be music and karaoke. Hope the sun shines for us!

Afternoon Tea with Uttoxeter Gateway Club

We thought it would be a great idea to host an Afternoon Tea.

Our members could help make cakes, savouries and sandwiches, set the room and the tables and then help serve all their families, friends and guests.

The Event was held at the Heath Community Centre on Sunday March 15th, with our members meeting at 10.00 sharp. It took us 10 minutes to unload cars!! We all washed our hands and started work.

The kitchen staff boiled eggs, buttered bread, whipped cream, cooked sausage rolls, put the jackets potatoes in the oven for our lunches, grated cheese, spread jam and cream on scones, cut tray bakes, and much more.

The front of house staff set out tables according to my sweated over table plan, spread table cloths, matched 50 cups, saucers and plates, arranged flowers, reserved tables, put the raffle prizes out and then we had lunch!!

As 2pm came nearer, we washed our hands, put on our new black aprons and welcomed our guests, then the table plan went out of the window!!.

The kitchen crew filled tea pots, arranged cakes, savouries and sandwiches on beautiful cake stands and the room filled with our friends and families.

We made sure our guests had oceans of tea, we chatted and laughed, we sold raffle tickets, flower troughs and bird boxes and had a lovely afternoon.

Thank you to everybody who was involved in any way and to our guests for coming and being so generous.

Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 virus, the Uttoxeter Gateway Club has now been suspended, our day trip postponed and the holiday cancelled,

Please keep well and safe

See you all as soon as we can
